Out of Cash and Forced to Dig Deep →

youngmanhattanite:

After Debbie Jenkins got sick, couldn’t work and lost two houses to foreclosure, after she burned through her savings, moved into an unheated garage in Crofton and still found herself six months behind on rent, she looked around for something to sell to help pay for the bologna and 60-cent cans of dollar-store vegetables that she, her daughter and three grandchildren live on.

She thought of her jewelry. But when she looked on Internet sales sites, she found more than 16,000 listings. She and her daughter held yard sales and netted $56. Then, somewhere in the boxes of judgments and collection notices piled around her garage home, she hit upon her truly final asset: the deed to a grassy plot of earth in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Prince George’s County, the spot where she once planned to spend eternity.
Emphasis mine because I once had to defend myself against the accusation of being a trust-fund kid. No idea how anyone would get that idea (unless I was drunk and using the world’s worst pick-up line, which is quite possible) since my parents raised 4 kids on one government salary. I guess it was a comfortable middle middle class life, even though our house was too small for a family of 6, forcing my oldest brother to live in the dining room during high school and our fanciest vacations were “down the ocean, hon” in OC, MD. Crofton’s biggest selling point is its location between Baltimore, DC and Annapolis.

Just wanted to clear that up. Hope this doesn’t mean I won’t be invited to future Guest of a Guest parties.

Sure, we have a strong sense of community responsiblity and don’t mind doing some charity work now and again. Consider yourself invited.
