Is The Meatpacking District Cool Again? →

bbook:

GoaG Rachelle seems to think so, and gets the kicker:

Rachelle Hruska, who runs the highly trafficked guestofaguest Web site, says the opening of the elevated High Line (see left) has given much-needed character to this area she dismissed until recent months — but now frequents because, “It doesn’t feel so gross and cheesy.”

“If you get the idea out of your head that it’s Meatpacking, you can have a really fun time.”

Fairly nuanced, and we’ll agree to a point. The Standard Grill - one of my favorite new restaurants in the city - definitely gets the job done, and has a really nice mix of diners. But besides the High Line, what’s keeping the Meatpacking District from being anything but? Our take: it’ll be cool again when you don’t have to forget how patently lame it is. Less Jersey Shore, more West Village, please.

Your take?

Agreed!
